The 24 hours that built the initiative

Discover the pivotal moments that forged The Silent Soldier Initiative. This is the raw, unflinching story of how trauma was transformed into a mission.

The 24-hour breaking point

As a Vancouver-based writer, director, and producer, and a former member of Canada's elite Special Operations Forces (JFT2), I was trained to survive the most unforgiving environments on earth. I thought I knew how to survive the worst. But the ambush that actually broke me didn't happen in combat. It happened over exactly 24 hours.

In one single day, my entire reality was stripped away. First, a conversation at my kitchen table ended my marriage of 17 years. My wife wasn't just leaving; she was leaving to have a child with someone else. Hours later, I lost my career. Everything that defined me as a man, a husband, and a provider was gone.

The silence after that kind of loss is deafening. I couldn't see a way forward. I went to a hotel room, locked the door, and made the decision to end my life. I was completely done fighting.

Then, my phone rang.

It was my son’s coach. My boy had suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. For two days, I stood over him.

Lifelines in the dark

During those 24 hours—and the brutal transition period that followed—I realized that isolation is the enemy, but you cannot survive it on sheer willpower alone. You need an extraction team. My survival, and the eventual creation of The Silent Soldier Initiative, was shaped by individuals and organizations who refused to let me fall through the cracks.

While I was fighting for my family's survival and my son's recovery, I was met with the very real, terrifying prospect of losing the roof over our heads. It was during this absolute breaking point that specific lifelines appeared.

Organizations like VETS Canada stepped in with immediate, tactical support, with people like Charlene Mullen working directly to secure emergency rent payments to keep my family housed. Leaders like Frank Paulicelli at the Royal Canadian Legion provided critical, ground-level guidance on navigating the complex Veterans Emergency Funds. And when food insecurity became a harsh reality.

The death of the silence

The biggest change after those 24 hours was the complete death of my own silence. Standing in that hospital room, watching my son fight for his life, I made a definitive decision: my pain could not be for nothing. I decided to weaponize my experience. The Silent Soldier Initiative (TSSI) was no longer just a concept—it became an absolute mandate. I decided that the skills I learned in the military had to be applied to a new battlefield. I shifted from being a victim of my circumstances to becoming a filmmaker and a voice for those still trapped in the dark.

I realized that to truly break the isolation that veterans and their families face, we couldn't just talk about it in closed circles. We had to show it to the world. The direct result of that 24-hour crisis is the dual-format documentary property I am now directing and producing: the 90-minute feature film Silent Battles and the 8-part premium limited series.

You are not alone. The collapse of your life is not the end of your story. We fight together now.

When you finish reading "The 24 Hours That Built The Initiative," you should feel a collision of raw empathy and unstoppable resolve. You just took a punch to the gut, followed by a firm hand pulling you back to your feet. Funding for Silent Battles isn't just funding a documentary it’s funding a mission.
